Hi, I’m Akiko!
I believe the best piano lessons are taught with joy and love. I love mentoring students to believe in themselves and let their talent blossom.
I performed in Carnegie Hall and played concertos with orchestras from winning competitions. My students have received many prizes and gone on study in the most prestigious conservatories in the US… but here is a secret. I didn’t grow up a child prodigy practicing for hours and hours. I really didn’t get serious about piano until college although I started piano at five. When I got to Northwestern for my masters, I was in over my head, studying among musicians who had serious training since childhood.
I have sought to improve my technique, musicianship, and performance from the physical and mental standpoints and learned how to teach them to others. Working with renowned artists such as Charles Richard-Hamelin, Peter Serkin, William Wolfram and David Owen Norris opened my eyes to new possibilities. Seeing different approaches from teachers around the world in masterclasses and festivals gave me a broader perspective. On my journey to improve my technique, I have studied with many technique experts. And to learn how to teach what I learn to my students, I have devoured many books on teaching. Even after getting my doctorate, I’m always learning. I love sharing what I have learned with my students and making it easy to understand.

Beginners and intermediate students can learn on digital keyboards with touch sensitive keys. For advanced students, I recommend an acoustic piano if they want to study the art of piano performance seriously.
