Hi, I’m Akiko, your online piano teacher!
I’ve performed in Carnegie Hall and played concertos with orchestras from winning competitions, but I wasn’t a child prodigy who practiced for hours and hours. I started piano at five and practiced everyday, but I didn’t get serious until I was in college. When I got to Northwestern for my masters, I was in over my head, studying among musicians who had serious training since childhood. Since then I have sought to improve my technique, musicianship and performance from the physical and mental standpoints and learned to teach them to others. I love sharing what I learn with my students and making it easy to understand.
My life changed when I met my late high school piano teacher, Mrs. Van Doeren. She showed me the joy of music and unconditional love. My goal is to continue her legacy and help others discover the joy of making music and gain confidence at the piano.
I’ve helped hundreds of students of all ages and levels in private lessons, group classes, summer festivals, and master classes. I believe that everyone has their own musical journey, and I’d love to be your guide! My adult students are busy professionals, parents, piano teachers and retirees. Join us!

Yes, you can take lessons on a digital keyboard if you don’t have an acoustic piano. I recommend getting full-size, weighted keys with touch sensitivity.

For private online lessons, I recommend using a laptop or tablet. You can get a higher quality sound with an external microphone and speaker if you’d like.
For video feedback lessons, all you need is your phone.

Yes! I played an anime concert with music from Ghibli movies and anime shows. My students love playing Japanese music! Do you want to play Merry-Go-Round of Life or Totoro? I can show you how to play it.
